We were recently invited to photograph at the Glasgow music festival known as Celtic Connections. Photographing live bands is a difficult challenge. Venus are dark, lighting is low and often coloured, and space is limited. Add that to the movement of the musicians, who are more intent on playing their instruments than posing for photos (shame on them!) and you have near-impossible conditions for photography. A combination of wide aperture, high ISO and fast shutter speed does not really solve the issues, but we were able to produce results that were pleasing to the band and their management.
